Join us for “Candlelight” Christmas Eve worship

Many churches have a special worship gathering on Christmas Eve - rather than on Christmas Day. One of the most beautiful and moving worship gatherings of the year is on Christmas Eve. We encourage you to join us Thursday December 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the “big sanctuary” of University Baptist Church.

There will be Bible readings and special music and singing Christmas songs. At the end of the worship time we all light candles to represent the birth of Jesus Christ the Son of God whom the Bible calls the “light of the world”.

Pastor Rick is happy to drive the church bus and pick up people who want to come to this special time.

  • Highland Plantation at 5:20 p.m.
  • Edward Gay apartments at 5:25 p.m.
  • Nicholson bus stop at 5:30 p.m.
  • Tigerland (please let me know where) at 5:35 p.m.

We will have our regular Sunday morning Bible study and worship on Sunday December 27.

Trip to downtown Baton Rouge for Christmas music - Sunday, December 20

One of the most moving and beautiful experiences of the year - Church of the Nations takes a group for the music and singing at downtown Baton Rouge churches. It begins at Mt Zion First Baptist Church at 6:00 p.m. - and then we walk to the next church for more music and singing. There are five churches - but we will go only to the first three. The third and last church we will go to is First Presbyterian Church.

Pastor Rick will pick up people who want to come starting at Edward Gay apartments at 5:00 p.m. We will park at First Presbyterian Church and then walk to Mt Zion. We want to be there before 5:30 p.m. because it will be very crowded very quickly.

As I said - this is one of my favorite trips during the year. Many people enjoy it very much. I hope you are able to come with us.

Christmas party next Friday, December 11

We invite internationals and Americans (involved in Church of the Nations activities) to join us for a special Christmas party on Friday, December 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the home of:

Leo and Margaret Stanley
916 Bourbon Avenue, 70808

There will be delicious food, friendly people, and singing Christmas songs. Please note that this party is only for adults - do not bring children. It is for internationals and Americans who participate in our activities (such as English Conversation and/or Sunday morning Bible study and worship) - you might also bring someone new who has just arrived (graduate student, visiting scholar, professor, and so on). If you drive yourself please be careful (1) not to block or park in other houses’ driveways and (2) not to park on the yard/grass in front of other houses.

If you need a ride the church bus can pick you up from:

  • Edward Gay at 6:30 p.m.
  • Nicholson bus stop at 6:35 p.m.
  • Tigerland (please let Rick know where) at 6:40 p.m.

Directions from Louisiana State University:

  1. Drive southeast along Highland Road
  2. Turn left onto Duplantier
  3. At the end of the street turn left then right onto Carriage Way
  4. Turn right onto Bourbon Avenue
  5. Look for house 916
  6. We suggest you park at the “circle” at the end of the street and walk back

Special choir and orchestra music on Sunday, December 13

Church of the Nations joins with University Baptist Church for a special worship gathering full of singing and music - including a choir and orchestra - on Sunday, December 13 starting at 10:30 a.m. Bible study will start earlier than usual at 9:30 a.m.

Please note the different schedule - only for that Sunday. We go back to our normal schedule Sunday December 20.

The bus can pick people up at the following places and times:

  • Highland Plantation at 9:00 a.m.
  • Edward Gay at 9:10 a.m.
  • Nicholson bus stop at 9:15 a.m.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Christmas Eve special worship - Wednesday, December 24

There will be a special Christmas Eve worship gathering at University Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the “big sanctuary” (across the courtyard from the chapel). This is one of the more beautiful worship gatherings of the year with Christmas music and songs, Bible readings that tell the story of the birth of Jesus, and finishing with the lighting of candles.

Pastor Rick will again drive the bus to pick up people who wish to come starting at Edward Gay at 6:00 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 6:03 p.m. and finally Nicholson bus stop at 6:07 p.m. The worship gathering should last about one hour.

Downtown Christmas Pilgrimage - Sunday, December 21

Church of the Nations will take a group downtown for the Downtown Christmas Pilgrimage this Sunday, December 21 starting at 6:00 p.m. at Mt Zion Baptist Church (near First United Methodist Church).

(I have had difficulty finding a good resource on the Internet for information about this. This is the best I have been able to find:

First Baptist Church calendar

First United Methodist Church calendar

best of all seems to be First Presbyterian Church - Christmas Carol Pilgrimage)

The Downtown Christmas Pilgrimage is a beautiful and special way to prepare for and celebrate Christmas. Basically there is music and singing at five churches in downtown Baton Rouge. We begin at one church then walk to the next one and the next one and so on - five churches in all. (We will probably not go to all five churches - that can take a long time and people might become too tired.)

You can drive yourself and meet us at the first church at 5:30 p.m. (nice and early in order to get good seats) or ride on the church bus which will pick up from Edward Gay at 5:00 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 5:03 p.m. finally Nicholson bus stop at 5:05 p.m. Please allow up to 5-7 minutes for the bus to arrive because of weather or traffic.

Children are welcome (as long as they participate and can walk with everyone else). We strongly recommend you have something to eat/drink before you come! (We may not be finished until around 8:00 p.m.)

This is perhaps Pastor Rick’s favorite activity during the Advent/Christmas season. We hope you can join us.

Christmas Party for Internationals - Friday, December 19

Our annual Christmas Party for Internationals will happen this Friday, December 19 starting at 7:00 p.m. at the home of:

Leo and Margaret Stanley
916 Bourbon Avenue, 70808

You can drive yourself or you can ride on the church bus which picks up from Edward Gay at 6:45 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 6:48 p.m. and finally Nicholson bus stop at 6:50 p.m.

*Please read these important notes about the party*

“The Night the Angels Sang” - Live Nativity this Sunday, December 07

Night the Angels Sang poster

We encourage as many people as possible to come and see “The Night the Angels Sang” - a live nativity* at University Baptist Church this Sunday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. (on the side facing Highland Road).

*A live nativity is a live presentation of the Christmas story. Actors in costume (and even animals) will present different scenes of the story.

There will also be a “Children’s Village” in the courtyard with games, snacks and crafts for children. We invite and encourage children to this event.

Pastor Rick plans to drive the bus to pick up people who need a ride. You can catch the church bus at Edward Gay at 5:10 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 5:13 p.m. and Nicholson bus stop at 5:15 p.m. To walk through the live nativity should take less than half an hour(?).

This activity is free. If you would like more information click on the poster above - this takes you to the website of University Baptist Church and a poster that tells more about the live nativity.
