Different schedule and Family Fun Day this Sunday, March 14

Please remember that we have a different schedule for our Sunday morning activities this Sunday, March 14. Basically everything will be one hour earlier:

  • Bible study at 9:20 a.m.
  • Worship gathering at 10:30 a.m.
  • Church bus picks up starting at Edward Gay at 9:00 a.m.

The reason is because this Sunday we encourage you to join us for Family Fun Day! After worship both Church of the Nations and University Baptist Church will have a picnic lunch. Games and small prizes for children. And a few games for older children and adults as well. Easter egg hunts. And music and entertainment while we eat.

(Church of the Nations normally helps prepare the lunches. So we will have a short worship time and then some of us will go to the kitchen and put food into boxes for the people.)

Dumpling party this Friday, January 29!

Jiaozi. Mandu. Momo. Gyoza. Dumplings.

We plan to celebrate the Lunar New Year early with our annual dumpling party on Friday, January 29 starting at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of University Baptist Church. We will make… cook… and eat dumplings! Along with a few cold dishes and desserts. What makes this activity different and special is that it is organized and led by internationals. Although Pastor Rick will of course drive the bus for people who need a ride.

We need people who would like to help organize this. That includes buying and preparing dough and ingredients, making wrappers, cooking, cleaning up. The church will cover the cost of food - so please save your receipts.

Update: We already have a team of several people who are coordinating this activity. But they need more helpers! Please call or email Rick Wright at rwright[at]ubc-br[dot]org or 225-766-7474 ext 222 if you want to help with this fun delicious evening.

This activity is for (1) people who participate in our Friday or Sunday activities and (2) their families and (3) new internationals that would like to learn more about Church of the Nations. Children are welcome - but parents must watch and be responsible for them!

You can drive yourself to the church - turn into the first parking lot where the fellowship hall is. Or you can ride on the church bus which picks up from:

  • Highland Plantation/Duplantier bus stop (next to WalMart) at 5:50 p.m.
  • Edward Gay apartments (outside gate) at 6:00 p.m.
  • Nicholson bus stop at 6:05 p.m.
  • Tigerland (let Rick know exactly where) at 6:10 p.m.

Yes this means we arrive at the party a little late. But it will not make much of a difference. We should be finished and taking people home by 8:00 p.m.

Annual Dumpling Party! Friday, January 16

In Nepal they call them momos.

In Japan gyoza.

In Korea mandu.

In Turkey manti.

(The food and the word may come from Turkic and Mongol horsemen during the 13th-14th centuries.)

In China they are known as jiaozi.

Dumplings.

You know them. You make them. You eat them. You love them. And you would change your weekend plans just to go to a party that has them.

Church of the Nations invites you to our Annual Dumpling Party this Friday, January 16 starting at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of University Baptist Church. We especially invite new internationals and encourage you to bring new internationals so we can meet them welcome them and let them know about our activities. Children may certainly come (although there is not childcare). And yes - Americans are welcome too!

You can drive yourself to this event or you can ride on the church bus which will pick up from Edward Gay at 5:45 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 5:48 p.m. finally Nicholson bus stop at 5:50 p.m. (We will also stop at Duplantier and Burbank/Jennifer Jean.)

“The Night the Angels Sang” - Live Nativity this Sunday, December 07

Night the Angels Sang poster

We encourage as many people as possible to come and see “The Night the Angels Sang” - a live nativity* at University Baptist Church this Sunday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. (on the side facing Highland Road).

*A live nativity is a live presentation of the Christmas story. Actors in costume (and even animals) will present different scenes of the story.

There will also be a “Children’s Village” in the courtyard with games, snacks and crafts for children. We invite and encourage children to this event.

Pastor Rick plans to drive the bus to pick up people who need a ride. You can catch the church bus at Edward Gay at 5:10 p.m. then Tiger Towers at 5:13 p.m. and Nicholson bus stop at 5:15 p.m. To walk through the live nativity should take less than half an hour(?).

This activity is free. If you would like more information click on the poster above - this takes you to the website of University Baptist Church and a poster that tells more about the live nativity.

CAMPING TRIP - Saturday-Sunday, September 27-28

Yes! Another camping trip! The weekend Saturday-Sunday, September 27-28 Church of the Nations will host a “camping trip” (or retreat) at Timber Creek Camp in Pulaski, Mississippi (just past Jackson). We will leave Saturday morning and return Sunday afternoon.

Timber Creek Camp, Mississippi

Learn more about Timber Creek Camp here.

The theme of the camp is “The Way of Relationship” and will focus on how we can know and have a personal relationship with God. Men/boys and women/girls will stay in nice cabins. There will be fun time, plenty of free time (to rest play or relax), and three short Bible studies. This is a great opportunity to have a short break and get away from Baton Rouge. There are plenty of fun things to do during free time (inside and outside). The food is very good.

The cost of the trip is $53 per person - but we are asking those who come to give only $20. (But we do not want anyone not to come because of cost - talk to us if the cost is a problem.) It is very important that people who want to go (a) reserve a spot and (b) provide the $20 per person.

Yes we know it is a little late to announce this but of course Hurricane Gustav made it difficult to advertise, print forms, and so on. We hope as many internationals as possible can come!

Here is the registration form in DOC and PDF formats. You can complete a form and send it to rwright AT ubc-br DOT org.
