International students (and scholars) throughout Louisiana are invited to the 2011 State International Student (and Scholar) Retreat held this Friday-Saturday February 25-26 at the Baptist Campus Ministry of Louisiana State University.
This is a chance to meet internationals from around the state. To have fun, ask questions, learn new things. All internationals – along with Americans participating in the retreat – will have dinner in an American home. Those from outside Baton Rouge will spend the night at an American home as well. There will be large group gatherings – to meet people and have fun. Small group seminars on different topics. And short trips to interesting places around Baton Rouge on Saturday afternoon.
The cost is $10 each. Some of the trips on Saturday also have a cost – such as tickets to the zoo.
If you would like to participate you do need to register. You can email lsubcm[AT]eatel[DOT]net or phone 225-343-0424.
Important – you can download the information and registration form here.
The retreat starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and ends Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Did you know that President Nixon sang during his visit to China?
Well – not really. But President Nixon sings a lot in the opera “Nixon in China” by the American composer John Adams. In a review of a 2006 London performance Eric Jeal of The Guardian wrote, “Nixon in China has been arguably the most influential opera of the past 20 years”. Should be interesting!*
Church of the Nations will take a group to see the New York Metropolitan Opera perform “Nixon in China” on Saturday February 12 starting at 12:00 noon. No we will not fly to New York City – we can see a live broadcast of the performance at the movie theater. We will go to the Citiplace movie theater on Corporate Boulevard at 11:30 a.m. You can meet us there or ride on the church bus which will pick up from:
- Highland Plantation/Duplantier at 11:00 a.m.
- Edward Gay apartments at 11:10 a.m.
- Nicholson bus stop at 11:15 a.m.
- (Tigerland – if someone asks me to pick them up there – at 11:20 a.m.)
Please eat lunch before you come. We ask for $10 to help with the cost of the tickets. Please let Rick Wright know if you want to come by Thursday February 10 so he can purchase enough tickets!
*The Metropolitan Opera does not recommend that young children watch this opera. I do not know why.
